Elio Altare

Elio Altare is one of the most famous and influential winemakers in Piedmont, considered one of the precursors of the so-called “modernist school” of Barolo. Born in 1950 in a family of farmers, Elio Altare started working in his father’s cellar in the 70s, after traveling to France and discovering the production methods of the great wines of Burgundy. Elio Altare, convinced that Barolo could reach the same levels of quality and elegance, started experimenting with new techniques of viticulture and vinification, such as green pruning, early harvest, short maceration and the use of barrique. These innovations led to a stylistic revolution of Barolo, which went from being an austere and tannic wine to a softer, fruity and harmonious wine.
